OpenAI, the organization behind ChatGPT, has signed a cooperation agreement with Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) of India to use the company’s data storage infrastructure, which will require up to 100 megawatts of power.
The agreement is part of a broader initiative known as the Stargate Project, a large-scale project valued at $500 billion. The project aims to develop critical infrastructure such as energy systems, advanced computing facilities, and large data centers to support the continued expansion of artificial intelligence. Stargate is being spearheaded by OpenAI in partnership with SoftBank and Oracle.
For TCS, the agreement marks a major step forward. Last year, the company announced plans to invest $7 billion in building data centers in India with a total power requirement of one gigawatt, positioning the firm as a key player in the global data infrastructure space.
India continues to attract significant investment in the technology sector, particularly in AI-related infrastructure. Major international companies such as Google, Amazon, Meta, and Microsoft are expanding their presence, alongside large local conglomerates including Reliance Industries and Adani Group.
Meanwhile, Tata Group, which owns TCS, has announced plans to integrate ChatGPT into its operations. The group intends to deploy the tool across its various businesses and make it available to its workforce, which numbers in the hundreds of thousands, over the coming years.
OpenAI has also revealed that around 100 million people in India currently use ChatGPT, highlighting the country’s growing importance in the global AI ecosystem and its rapidly expanding user base.
